Jesus saw this woman in the synagogue on a Sabbath. What would it have taken for him to see her. I believe the women sat at the back of the synagogue behind a curtain.  Did he see her through the curtain? The text says that when he saw her he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” How that must have upset those assembled on that Sabbath! Women did not belong at the front of the synagogue nor did the Pharisees think it was okay to heal on the Sabbath. The temperature is rising in that room when Jesus answers the synagogue ruler who has instructed people to come and be healed on days other than the Sabbath. Jesus answered him “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”

Do I see the people I encounter on Sunday? Do I take the time to really see others? Am I willing to help others be set free by Jesus? Jesus set her free and gave her the living water! Lord, please set us free from what binds us.
